Sam McNally:
musician, producer, music educator
I work as a professional musician and music educator. I've been doing what I do for a very long time and I LOVE what I do more than when I began this, back in 1973. Between performing live with a range of great artists, recording a whole variety of things, working as a music educator, and finally travelling that is so much a part of what I do.... I've had a good life and I hope it continues for some while yet.
Sam McNally was keyboardist with Australia’s premier ‘white soul’ group STYLUS
(Motown Records USA; Toshiba-EMI Japan); he recorded with 80’s super group
AIR SUPPLY, and worked with the great vocalist JOHN FARNHAM, guitar genius
TOMMY EMMANUEL, with TIM FINN (Split Enz/Crowded House), with guitarist/ producer LOUIE SHELTON (Seals&Croft, Boz Scaggs), Marcia Hines (Australian Idol),
Richard Clapton...and 1970’s legends Spectrum (“I’ll Be Gone”) in 2011.
Sam performed at the Bellini, Venetian in Macau, mid-2010 with American soul/funk/R&B singer and bassist DOUG WILLIAMS; he was Musical Director for UK
folk-pop legend DONOVAN at Australia’s “Bluesfest” in 2012, and was keyboardist
for 90's pop diva, TAYLOR DAYNE on her 2013 Australian tour.
Sam is M.D./Producer for Tokyo-based, Japanese vocal trio 'JOY2' (WorldMusic, Health
& Healing), and has recently worked with ‘The Voice’ (Australia) finalists Diana Rouvas
and Mitch Anderson. He recorded albums with Clint Crighton, Aaron Lyon, Joel Harrison
and Linda Wood. In 2014/15 he produced Bangkok-based Thai artist EARTHcollide.
Some of his songs have been recorded by Stylus, Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Clapton and Louie Shelton.
Sam has lived and worked in Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Shenzhen, Macau, Hong Kong, Beijing, Bangkok, New Delhi, Jakarta, Singapore and Colombo; and in Los Angeles,
New York and London. He has completed contracts at the Shinjuku Hilton (Tokyo), Colombo Swimming Club (Sri Lanka), the Maurya Sheraton (New Delhi)
and “True Color” in Shenzhen, China.
Sam has recorded numerous albums of his own including the Smooth Jazz "Jubilation" (2003/05) and relaxation music "Peace Entourage" (2006). The Sam McNally Group has appeared at prestigious festivals such as Sydney’s Manly Jazz Festival, and Jakarta’s Java Jazz Festival in 2007.
Sam regularly produces and arranges a variety of vocal artists. He was a lecturer at the prestigious Australian Institute of Music, Sydney campus, 2013-2015, and helped set up the ‘Do Re Me’ music school in Nanshan district, Shenzhen, China, in 2016. At the
2016 ABRSM Grade 5 Jazz Piano exams in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sam scored
a “High Distinction”.
Through 2018, Sam has performed with Doug Williams & The Mix, Stylus,
Simone Waddell, Mitch Anderson, Diana Rouvas, Mark Vincent, Everyday People Band,
Jo Elms, "Are You Listening Sydney?", Liza Ohlback, William Crighton and Prinnie Stevens. He has also held a position at Sydney's top music school, the JMC Academy, teaching contemporary piano.
